  • Communications about Heifer:
OVERVIEW: As a culminating experience for the fall unit on food deserts/distribution of resources/urban garden design, 9th grade students will engage in an experience of a lifetime in November! Students enter Heifer International’s Global Village in Maryland, where they will experience some of the challenges of global hunger and poverty, learning about the distribution of resources through a simulation.  Students will come out energized and determined to be part of a solution.  Heifer Ranch is also a working example of sustainable agriculture which lays the groundwork for global solutions students will explore in their sophomore year.

BONUS EXPERIENCE: Because we'll be so close to Washington, D.C. (flying in and out of both Dulles and Reagan, depending on the flight group), students will spend time exploring Smithsonian exhibits related to several units of study from the year. We'll also tour monuments and memorials to tie into our final reflective task of the year.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THE PRICE? airfare, charter bus transportation, hotel and cabin lodging in Sharpsburg, MD and Washington, DC., most meals (all breakfasts/all dinners), admission into activities, program fees for the Heifer Global Village experience

WHAT IS NOT COVERED? food/snacks/drinks in airports on travel days, lunch when we are in D.C. (2 lunches will be purchased while we are exploring D.C., and students may choose from food trucks, Smithsonian cafeterias, fast food, etc. We recommend $30 to cover lunches. Tip money is also not included in the total price -- we will collect $15/person to tip our bus drivers
